It seems like every time you turn on the television or pick up a newspaper there are updates about climate change and how it’s destroying natural resources like the Great Barrier Reef. For that reason and more, more and more Australian households are making the switch to solar power.
Many homeowners would like to make the switch to solar power, but the cost of installation can be prohibitively expensive. Thankfully for homeowners in New South Wales, there are cost-saving options to help make your solar dreams a reality. Read on to learn all about the NSW solar rebate!
Small-Scale Technology Certificates
Small-scale technology certificates (STCs) are available for homeowners who install any kind of renewable energy generator, solar included. When you install a renewable energy generator, the federal government with award a particular number of STCs based on the expected energy output of that generator during its lifetime. Each STC is valued at $40 and can be sold to offset installation costs.
The number of STCs you receive is dependent, in part, upon where you live in Australia. Australia is divided into four zones based upon the amount of sun your area receives. Zone 1 receives the most STCs because they get the most sun, while zone 4 receives the least sun and STCs.
NSW is mostly situated within zone 3, but a small portion is within zone 2. Thus, the amount of STCs you receive is based on your zone and the output of your generator.
Feed-in tariffs are an option for homeowners whose solar systems produce more energy than they use. In this system, excess energy is fed back into the grid. You then receive a set rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh) that is produced as a credit on your electric bill.
Every electric retailer has a different rate, but you can expect to receive 8.5 to 10.4 cents per kilowatt-hour during the 2019-2020 financial year.
Solar for Low-Income Homes
Even with STCs, solar electricity may still be out of reach for low-income homeowners in NSW. Thankfully, the NSW government started a new initiative to help up to 3,000 households get solar systems installed on their homes for free.
You must apply and meet the eligibility requirements to receive a free solar system. To be eligible, you must already be receiving the Low Income Household Rebate; not have a solar system; own your home, including the roof; and hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card. You must also live in the Central Coast, North Coast, Sydney-South, Illawarra-Shoalhaven, or South Coast.
Applications are not yet open, but it should open later on in 2019.
