Wind power is another form of renewable energy in which the wind is used to generate electricity.
Wind turbines are used to convert the wind’s kinetic energy into mechanical power that generators can turn into electricity for different applications. This technology works by rotating blades around a rotor, which in turn drives the shaft that spins a generator.

Sizes of Wind Turbines
Similar to solar power systems, wind turbines vary in size and can generate small to large amounts of electricity.
Small-scale wind power is typically made of single wind turbines that can generate below 100 kilowatts of electricity, enough to supply power for smaller residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural applications. For larger applications, there are utility-scale wind turbines, wind farms, and offshore wind turbines, with sizes ranging from 100 kilowatts to thousands of megawatts.
Types of Wind Turbines
There are two primary types of wind turbines: horizontal-axis wind turbines and vertical-axis wind turbines. Other wind turbine types also exist, namely the subtypes of the vertical axis design and the unconventionally designed wind turbines.
Horizontal Wind Turbines
Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) are the most widely used of the two wind power technology types and is responsible for producing a majority of the wind power in the world today. It is characterized by its three large blades and main rotor shaft that are located on top of the tower, which resembles a fan, and has low torque ripple for enhanced reliability.
Vertical Wind Turbines
Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT), on the other hand, do not resemble a fan due to its unique design wherein the main rotor shaft is set transverse to the wind while its other components are situated at the lower section of the turbine. Unlike HAWTs, VAWTs do not need to be pointed into the wind for it to generate power effectively, and offers several advantages over traditional wind turbines.
Applications of Wind Turbines
Depending on its size and how it is utilised, a wind turbine can generate electricity for anything from small residential applications to mid-sized agricultural sites to larger commercial applications. One of the best ways wind turbines are utilised is when they are grouped together to form a wind farm or wind park, which can consist of up to thousands of megawatts.
